The next morning Angie laid on the examination table while Zephon stood on one side of her and Mia on the other. His friend, Ram, had given them access to go through an entrance used only by the security staff. This was to make sure they didn’t encounter a lot of people and wouldn’t have to answer unnecessary questions about why they were at the medical facility.

When they arrived, Mia met them in a back hallway and led them to the private room they were in now. Angie couldn’t control the butterflies dancing in her stomach. Although she kept telling herself the baby was fine, she couldn’t be sure. She hadn’t received any type of medical care and the baby had been in stasis with her for two hundred years.

What if she’d been carrying around an unviable fetus for two hundred years?!

She’d wondered that every day since waking up from stasis, but this was the first time she actually let her brain realize the gravity of the situation.

Mia placed a hand gently on her shoulder. “Relax.”

Easier said than done, Angie thought as Mia guided a big machine slowly over Angie’s stomach where it hovered about a foot away from her skin. A holograph projected a hazy shape. The picture gradually formed and was one hundred times better than ultrasounds back on Earth.

The picture came into view pixelated, but after a while she saw her baby. Not a black and white distorted picture either. She saw her baby.

Her baby was a small thing that looked like it could be an alien. The eyes were closed and a thumb was in the mouth.

“There you are,” Mia cooed.

“That’s my baby?” Angie asked in disbelief even though she already knew the answer. She reached for her stomach, intending to rub it, but instinctively pulled back when it obscured the video feed. “Is it…?”

Mia used her free hand to poke Angie in the side. The baby moved and stretched. Zephon and Angie spoke at the same time. “Awww.”

“We’ll need to know the gender,” Zephon said.

Mia glanced at Angie and Angie nodded. Mia hit a button and words appeared next to the baby. As Mia read the report, Angie homed in on thing. Female.

She didn’t know whether to be happy or sad. She had a healthy baby girl. If the Bride Program Officials found out they might take her away.

Her vision clouded and she dragged in frantic breaths. Zephon’s big hand slipped into hers. “We’ll get through this together. No one will harm her or you.”

The promise eased some of her panic. She’d lied and deceived him. She had no reason to believe or trust what he said, but she did.

Angie squeezed his hand. “Thank you.”
